PRP injections and products such as AmnioFix® and EpiFix® are all treatments that use the body’s natural regenerative ability to heal orthopedic injuries and degenerative joint disease. At Spine & Joint Physicians of Frisco, S. Justin Badiyan, MD, specializes in regenerative therapies that accelerate healing and relieve your pain. Many types of adult stem cells thrive inside your body, where they continuously divide and produce new cells that develop or differentiate into different types of cells. Adult stem cells regenerate the cells your body needs to replace old tissues and repair damaged tissues.
Dr. Badiyan at Spine & Joint Physicians of Frisco may recommend injections of regenerative cells such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and AmnioFix®. Both treatments contain growth factors and other proteins that attract stem cells and accelerate healing.
Along with red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma, platelets are a natural constituent of your blood. When injured, platelets immediately travel to the damaged tissues and do two things: They stop the bleeding and activate healing.
When platelets arrive at injured tissues, they release proteins called growth factors. There are many different growth factors, and each one triggers specific aspects of healing.
To give you a few examples, growth factors may stimulate new blood vessels, build a matrix to support new tissue growth, or accelerate healing. Growth factors from platelets also regulate inflammation and support stem cells as they regenerate new tissues.
PRP is blood plasma that contains a concentrated number of platelets. Dr. Badiyan makes PRP in the office by drawing a sample of your blood and processing it in a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the different blood components, making it easy to extract the platelets and a small amount of plasma. Then Dr. Badiyan immediately injects your PRP at the site of your injury, where the extra boost of platelets accelerates healing.
AmnioFix and EpiFix are products made from dehydrated human amnion/chorion membranes. Women who deliver a baby via Caesarean section willingly donate these amniotic tissues. The women and babies are tested for infectious diseases, and then the tissues go through PURION® processing that ensures they’re sterile and safe.
Both products contain a mixture of proteins, growth factors, and numerous types of specialized cells that are essential for healing. AmnioFix and EpiFix draw stem cells to the area, enhance healing, regulate inflammation, and reduce scarring.
